What is Bound Hare Press?
Bound Hare Press is a small independent press publishing boundary-pushing fiction and poetry by select writers. We focus on challenging, complex books that often fall outside commercial publishing expectations and prioritize artistic integrity over market conformity.
Why publish with Bound Hare Press?
We offer an alternative to both traditional and author-paid publishing models. Authors work with us to:
- Build credibility through selective, curated publication
- Publish outside large commercial platforms and algorithms
- Retain full rights to their work
- Gain visibility through our website, author pages, and curated promotion
- Have book titles available for sale at select book festivals and literary events when appropriate
We publish selectively and intentionally, working with authors whose work aligns with our editorial philosophy.
How does it work?
Independent writers submit their manuscripts for editorial consideration. If accepted, books are published and sold through Bound Hare Press using print-on-demand (POD) production.
When a book is sold:
- The author receives 65% of net royalties
- Bound Hare Press retains 35% to support production, distribution, and operations
Are there any costs to authors?
No. Bound Hare Press is not a vanity or author-paid press.
Accepted authors do not pay any fees to be published or distributed through us.
Because we operate as a fee-free small press, we publish selectively and require submissions to be publication-ready.
How are books printed and shipped?
Books are printed and shipped through Lulu Press, a print-on-demand service. This allows us to publish responsibly without overproduction while ensuring professional print quality.
How do authors get paid?
Royalties are generated when books are sold and are paid automatically approximately every 30 days via PayPal. Authors can request royalty statements at any time.
What genres do you publish?
We publish fiction and poetry. We are not genre-driven, but editorially selective.
We are drawn to work that is:
- Provocative and uncompromising
- Stylistically or thematically ambitious
- Grounded in strong voice and craft
Graphic novels or comics may be considered only if they meet POD specifications.
What don't you publish?
We generally do not publish:
- Romance
- Erotica
- Non-fiction
- Conventional mysteries
Exceptions may be made for work that is formally or conceptually original.
What do I need?
All submissions must be publication-ready. If accepted, authors are required to provide:
- A professionally edited and formatted manuscript
- A high-quality paperback cover
- An author bio
- An author headshot
- A PayPal account for royalty payments
Who sets the book prices?
Authors set initial pricing, provided it:
- Aligns with current market standards
- Meets required production and royalty margins
Bound Hare Press reserves the right to adjust pricing when necessary.
Do authors retain the rights to their books?
Yes. Authors retain all rights, including copyright and the ability to market and sell their work elsewhere.
Authors must confirm that their book is not bound by any exclusive agreement that would prevent publication with Bound Hare Press.
Do you provide editing or book cover design services?
No. We do not offer editorial or design services prior to acceptance.
However, after acceptance, we may:
- Correct minor grammatical or spelling errors with author approval
- Adjust formatting for production purposes (trim size, spine width, layout, fonts)
Besides format changes, are there any other changes that are applied to my book?
Yes, in the information section of your book the following text will be added:
Imprint: Lulu Press
Distributed by: Bound Hare Press
The Bound Hare Press logo will also appear on the spine.
What book formats do you print?
Bound Hare Press publishes paperbacks. In some cases, we may make a title available in eBook format.
How long is your acceptance process?
Our review process typically takes 8–12 weeks. Due to the volume of submissions, we are unable to provide individualized feedback on declined manuscripts.
